What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a sprint-like event where entrepreneurs, software developers, innovators, and designers collaborate for one or more days to create creative technology solutions to specific sets of problem statements. The #goal is to develop an MVP (minimum viable product) by the end of the event.

What is this LawTech Hackathon Malaysia?

LawTech Hackathon Malaysia is Malaysia’s First Ever LawTech Hackathon. It is a 30 hours hackathon taking place on 20th and 21st October, 2018 at WORQ Subang.

LawTech Hackathon engaged major tech companies, law schools, law firms, in-house legal departments, and legal tech companies in Malaysia to bring together the best of both worlds to create functioning technical solutions needed to solve problems in the Malaysian legal industry.

Why take part in this LawTech Hackathon Malaysia?

This is a grassroots movement by a passionate group of people over at Legal Hackers KL. Hackathons are golden opportunities for participants to get yourself noticed by companies whether now or in the future and a chance to accelerate your project after the event.

Especially since this is Malaysia’s First Ever LawTech Hackathon, be one of the first to observe and be part of the growth of LegalTech in Malaysia!

How To Participate

Who can apply?

You don’t have to be a tech expert. You can apply even if you do not have coding skills! Give us the passion to improve the legal industry and problem solving attitude and we’re good to go! We are looking for:

- People in the legal industry as a practising lawyer, an in-house counsel or even a chambering student!

- People in the IT arena be it a software developer, a tech personnel of a law firm with a passion to improve the legal profession.

- Entrepreneurs looking to develop a programme for the legal technology industry, people working in a government agency who interacts with the legal industry.

- Legal academics, students reading law and/or pursuing software development.

How do I register and how much does it cost?

Register online here! The fees include food, beverage, accommodation, and WiFi.

Can I pay at the door?

No, pre-registration is required.

Is there a minimum age requirement for this hackathon?

Yes, we only accept participants that are above the age of 18, as of 31 December 2018.

How do I get there? Is there LRT or BRT?

Yes, there are multiple options of public transportation to get to our venue.

LRT: Take the Kelana Jaya LRT Line, and stop at Subang Jaya station. Then cross over to UOA Business Park via link bridge.

KTM: Hop onto Sentul-Port Klang line and stop at Subang Jaya KTM station.

BRT: Stop at USJ 7 stop and use the USJ 7 LRT to go to Subang Jaya station.

Pitches and Teams

What ideas can I pitch at LawTech Hackathon Malaysia?

The sky (and our problem statements) is the limit! Look at our problem statements here and pitch your ideas on how to solve those problems.

Our problem statements are wide ranging and uber relevant to the current Malaysian legal industry climate.

Can I pitch my existing business?

No. LawTech Hackathon Malaysia is designed to be an effective platform to grow new businesses from the ground up over this 30 hours event.

Do I need a team?

No, you do not need to have a team as LawTech Malaysia (organiser) will match you up and form teams on the first day of the LawTech Hackathon.

If you do not have a team, please join the Pre-Hack networking function to mingle with other participants and meet like minded people. (Details will be shared to all who signed up)

If you do have a team, feel free to join as a team and join the Pre-Hack networking function to meet other talents!

What size can a team be?

Teams can be formed between 2 to 5 people.

What should I bring?

Things to bring?

- Laptop

- Power cord

- Business cards

- Camera - take pictures and videos!

- Optional: A second monitor, keyboard, headphones, etc…. set yourself up to be productive!

- Your creative energy and your dynamic problem solving passion!

During Event
Itinerary

May I know the overall event flow?

LawTech Hackathon Malaysia aims to be an informative and innovative event. The main event is for you to code a technical solution and prepare to pitch your technical solution on Day 2. Your product will be judged and the winners will be announced on Day 2. We also have many other exciting sessions such as a panelship sessions to discuss on the problem statements and the current climate of the legal industry.

Will there be mentors?

Yes, there will be 20 floating mentors to help you during the event.

Judging

What are our goals as participants?

The main goal is to create a MVP (minimum viable product) by the end of the hackathon. You will then present your MVP to the judges and stand a chance to be funded and win the grand prize!

What are the judging and winning process for the teams?

Judging Criteria:

- Presentation & Pitch
- UI/UX - user friendly
- Creativity of MVP
- Sustainability

Method of judging:

Both pitching round 1 & 2 are on the second day.
1st round: Participants will be divided into 4 tracks to be judged on the 2nd day.
Final round: Top 6 teams will be chosen for another round of pitching.
3 winners will be chosen after the final round of pitching.

What is next?

Are teams expected to continue after the event?

We love your energy and if you do continue your project with your teammates, all the better! Many teams found that their MVP is too good to pass up and continue with it.

Intellectual Property

Who owns the intellectual property of the hacks (products)?

Teams retain the intellectual property rights of their hacks.

LawTech Malaysia reserves the right to publish presentations and/or other materials submitted during the LawTech Hackathon on its website or other relevant sites for the purpose of marketing and promoting its work.

What is the refund policy?

Can I refund my ticket?

We do not refund tickets to you after you have registered with us.
